Why do Indians eat food with their hands? A lot of people would think it is barbaric to eat food with bare hands. On the other hand, Indians think that eating food with their hands is very clean and virtuous. They eat rice, soup, bread, and other foods without any tools. The main cause of this different eating culture is their religion. To understand their way of eating, we have to understand their culture and religion. Most of Indians believe in Hindu. Hindus believe in reincarnation, Karma, and cast system. Cast system divides people into 5 different casts: Brahmins, Kshatriyas Vishay, Sutras, and untouchables. Brahmins are the highest cast and Kshatriyas is second, and Vishay as third. Those cast is inborn. In other words, your cast is determined by your parents cast. However Indians believe Karma actually determines their cast. Karma is the moral law of action and reaction. Beliefs of Karma are following: the present condition of your soul is a product of your past deeds, and your present thoughts and deed determines your future cast. Therefore, regardless to your current cast, you are going to reincarnate and your cast is going to be determined by your past deeds and actions. If you do good deed and follow the code of Vedas, the holiest books of Hindu religion, you will be in higher cast, and vise versa. According to the Vedas, each cast has to be separated, and there cannot be a contact between the casts. Contacting to different cast is considered one of the bad deeds that will lead you to lower cast in future life. In order to minimize the contact, Indians avoids usage of spoon or chopsticks. They believe that usage of those tools would cause indirect contact with different casts. Therefore, people from higher cast more tends to avoid eating with spoon and eat with bare hand. Indians eat food with their bare hands because they want to prevent contact or any influence from different casts.
