When I said I eat the feet of cows, most of my American friends were shocked. Their reactions varied: shocked, laughed, or disgusted. But feet of cow, Wu Jok, is one of the most prestigious food in Korea. It has a lot of gelatin and protein in it. I was also disgusted when I knew they were the feet of cows. Even though I was reluctant to eat Wu Jok, I was forced to eat it every day during the last summer. Last summer, I joined a soccer club in an international student league. My team was lucky and was able to get up to tournament. The tournament was very competitive and most of the teams were better than my team. Fortunately my team made up to the final round. During the final round, I accidentally collided against goal post and hurt my knee. My teammates had to call 911, and I hurt my knee so bad that I was not even able to walk. At that time, I thought I would not be able to use my right leg. When I got out of the emergency room, my right knee was covered with plaster cast, and I was on wheel chair. As I was getting out of emergency room, the doctor told me that it would be hard for me to walk again. I was desperate and depressed. I had to stay on wheel chair for a while. Because of this injury, I had to cancel my driver’s license test, quit my part time job, and stop playing soccer. I spent most of my summer in my apartment. One day, my mother cooked a soup that I have never seen. When I first tasted it, it did not like it but I was forced to finish them all. My mother never told me what it was, but told me it is good for my knee and will heal my knee. Every single meal during the summer break, I had to finish one bowl of the soup. I did not believe in what my mother said about the soup, but surprisingly, when I went back to hospital to see doctor, the doctor undid the cast and told me to walk. I tried but was not even able to stand up. But I started rehab and kept eating the soup every single meal. By the week before the school starts, I was fully recovered and did not have any problem playing soccer. The doctor was also surprised, too. He thought the knee would not be recovered at least for four years. When I got home after undoing the cast on my right knee, my mother told me the soup is called Wu Jok, and it is cooked with feet of cow. Through eating Wujok, I was able to fully recover from knee injury. Wujok is one of the unforgettable food that I have ever eaten.
